Congenital toxoplasmosis is still one of the most important health problems in the world. Its frequency was estimated to be 1:1,000±1:10,000 live births. Risks of infection causing harm to the baby are greater in the earlier period of pregnancy. If left untreated, 85% of children develop signs and symptoms of the disease including chorioretinitis or developmental delays. The most frequent manifestation is lymphadenopathy causing 3-7% of clinically important cases. Neonatal clinical manifestations of congenital toxoplasmosis are miscellaneous, involving hydrocephalus, microcephaly, intracranial calcifications, chorioretinitis, strabismus, blindness, epilepsy, psychomotor or mental retardation, petechia associated with thrombocytopenia, and anaemia. In this book you will find the genetics, immunology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and future study plans of congenital toxoplasmosis.
