Chernobyl Radionuclides in Environmental Samples from Romania&austria: Radioactive Contamination of the Environment in Romania and Austria After the Chernobyl Disaster
Werner Hofmann
Following the Chernobyl accident from 26 of April 1986, many European countries were contaminated with high amounts of radioactive material, from which, cesium, strontium and plutonium were the most important constituents. The book presents the radionuclide concentrations in different environmental samples (roof sediment, soil, pollen, sand, roof-water, street dust) collected in 1986 from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Another chapter describes the Chernobyl cesium behaviour in mosses and lichens from Salzburg province, Austria, 20 years after the catastrophe. These perennial plants seem to be suitable bioindicators of the radioactive fallout, even if many years have passed since 1986.
