Livelihood Transformation in the Urban Fringe: a Regional Perspective from India

Livelihoods are the ways in which people satisfy their needs or gain a living. Urban fringe livelihood in contemporary developing economies like India is their ability to adapt in order to survive. This study concentrates on the livelihood of the villagers of urban fringe of Indian cities, expanding fast; moreover, it is surrounded by a populous rural area with productive and rich agricultural hinterland. Such conditions give rise to many conflicts between rural and urban economies, values, and people. However, they also generate mutually beneficial complementarities in the rural and urban spheres. The net outcome is highly selective for different groups and different locations.
