The book is devoted to the Iroquois Confederacy (League of Five Nations), one of the strongest Indian associations in North America in the early colonial period. Particular attention is paid to the socio-potestar organization of the Iroquois society, which is characterized as a complex and efficient system that functioned without the aid of any bureaucratic institutions of government and preserved egalitarian traditions. The role of the military organization and its influence on the whole history of the Confederation is disclosed. The history of the League's creation is explored, the problem of tribal representation in the Confederacy is uncovered, and the structure and functions of the Union Council are examined.
