Maternal mortality has positioned itself as a topic of high national and international interest, due to its economic impact. In Ecuador, despite the significant reduction that occurred from 1990 to 2015, there is still much work to be done. The dissertation shows the characterization of maternal mortality and groups of basic causes of maternal mortality, the global and regional situation of maternal mortality, the policies that have been implemented in countries of the region and have impacted the reduction of maternal mortality. The characterization of mortality and the groups of basic causes show that there is still much work to be done, especially on issues related to: prenatal care, ethnic minority groups, adolescent and unplanned pregnancies, medical care in rural areas, family support, quality of health services and the presence of health services with an intercultural approach. And some policies applied in the region are presented, which could be applied in Ecuador in order to correct the problems identified in the characterization of the basic causes.
