The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is one of the most important products in human nutrition for its high content of protein and vitamins. It is the grain legume of direct human consumption, for the Ecuadorian population is one of the main sources of protein and carbohydrates. Bean is especially important in the diet of women and children; it is also of great economic importance, as it generates income for millions of small farmers. In Ecuador, bean is the legume with the largest cultivated area, currently harvested 89,789 hectares in dry grain and 15,241 ha in green or tender of the 16,464 ha, sown. The average yield of bean recorded in Ecuador is under 430 kg / ha in monoculture.
