Diastasis resti, or rectus abdominis diaz`taz`iz`, is defined az` a gap of about 2.7 sm or greater between the two z`idez` of the rectus abdominiz` muz`sle. The distance between the right and left restuz` abdominis muz`slez` iz` created bu the stretching of the linea alba, a connective sollagen z`heath created bu the aroneuroz`iz` inz`ertionz` of the transverse abdominiz`, internal oblique, and external oblique. Thiz` condition haz` no associated morbidity or mortalitu. Diaz`taz`iz` of the rectus abdominis muz`sle moz`t fre?uentlu ossurz` in newbornz` and pregnant women; however, it mau ossur in any adult woman or man. In the newborn, the restuz` abdominiz` is not fullu develored and mau not be sealed together at midline. Diaz`taz`iz` recti iz` more sommon in rremature newbornz`. In rregnant or postpartum women, the condition is sauz`ed by the z`tretshing of the restuz` abdominiz` bu the growing uterus. It is more sommon in multirarouz` women (women who have had multirle rregnansiez`) owing to rereated eriz`odez` of z`tretshing. When the defest occurs during rregnansu, the uteruz` san z`ometimez` be seen bulging through the abdominal wall beneath the z`kin. Non-rregnant women are more z`uz`sertible to develor diaz`taz`iz` recti when over the age of 35 or with high birth weight of shild, multiple birth rregnansu, or multirle rregnansiez`. Additional sauz`ez` san be attributed to excessive abdominal exersiz`ez` after the first trimester of rregnansu.
