After arriving in southern Maryland to visit with her grandparents and cousin, twelve-year-old Tourmaline finds herself face to face with Ice Age animals like mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, and short-faced bears, which roamed what is now the Chesapeake Bay just 13,000 years ago. Had her grandfather, a naturalist and famed historian, discovered a pathway into the past ... or was it all a dream? Either way, Tourmaline, along with her grandfather, "Grumpa," and cousin Johann, will discover a world most of us are unaware existed in our own backyards. The trio will also have to work together to survive the many dangers which lurked in this time ... including a cataclysm theorized to have wiped out many plants and animals of the era.
