Rick Hafele's Favorite Fly Patterns

After more than 50 years of fly fishing, these are the flies I want in my fly box no matter where or when I'm fishing for trout. While many patterns are designed to match a specific insect or hatch, most of these flies represent pattern styles that can be adjusted in size and color to match dozens of different insects. This is one reason for their widespread success. The patterns include five nymphs, five emergers, and six dry flies. After each dressing I provide a brief description of what insects they can imitate and how I typically fish them.
