The Rise of Silas Lapham is a realist novel via William Dean Howells published in 1885. The tale follows the materialistic rise of Silas Lapham from rags to riches, and his ensuing moral susceptibility. Silas earns a fortune inside the paint commercial enterprise; however, he lacks social requirements, which he tries to obtain via his daughter's marriage into the aristocratic Corey circle of relatives. Silas' morality does no longer fail him. He loses his money however makes the right moral selection while his accomplice proposes the unethical promoting of the turbines to English settlers. Howells is understood to be the daddy of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. The decision of the affection triangle of Irene Lapham, Tom Corey, and Penelope Lapham highlights Howells' rejection of the conventions of soppy romantic novels as unrealistic and deceitful.
