The Spinster Edith Wharton
The Spinster
Edith Wharton
In 1850 the New York high bourgeoisie enjoyed a neglected prosperity. Delia, "queen" of the endogamous Ralston clan, finalizes the details of her wardrobe to shine in the social event of the year: the union of her cousin Charlotte Lovell with Joe Ralston, which will also seal an alliance between the two hegemonic families of New York. When nothing seems to be able to disrupt such an idyllic future, a deranged Charlotte breaks into Delia's house to reveal a secret that will forever alter the placidity of their lives and that, if known, would overturn the ethical codes that both have been nurturing. The destinies of Charlotte and Delia are tragically tied under the inviolability of the secret they share, consolidating between them a stormy relationship in which jealousy, compassion, filial love and suspicion converge.
