Recently widowed, Fiona attempts to outrun her grief by tending to the demands of her Montana farm. Set in a small outpost town in 1901, Fiona finds healing in her small circle of friends, the land, and a newly arrived ranch hand with a dark past.

Raised in Boston by a transcendentalist family, Fiona takes to reminiscing about her upbringing and her beloved family. Toggling between her past in Boston and her current life in Montana, Fiona shows us the internal conflicts that arise from being a part of these two different worlds. Recalling her life back east rekindles a desire for intellectual stimulation and she decides to create the town's first library.

These endeavors and musings serve to distract her from grief for a time, but to heal completely she must eventually face her pain as well as decide where she will spend the rest of her days-on the wild western homestead she has grown to love, or back in Boston with the family she has missed so much.

A cast of strong, independent female characters provide an underlying thread to Fiona's story which celebrates the untamed, free-thinking women of the early 20th century who didn't fit society's molds.
