Ben Quick (Paul Newman) is a rough and ready rancher who sets up in a town ruled by wealthy landowner Will Varner (Orson Welles). Unhappy that his weak son, Jody (Anthony Franciosa) will inherit his estate, Varner seeks to marry his strong-willed daughter, Clara (Joanne Woodward), off to Quick, but the plan soon backfires on him.
