Drama set in the 1920s in which the arrival of a non-conventional English teacher causes a stir in a relatively slow-moving Canadian town. When Henry Buchanan (David Warner) journeys to Canada from England, the locals are furious to discover that Henry was a conscientious objector during World War I. Some are more welcoming than others, however, and when Henry befriends the affluent divorcee Mrs Boswell (Honor Blackman) and the daughter of a pivotal figure in the community, Clarissa (Trudy Young), it does little to enhance his reputation.
