Based on the novel by Carlo Fruttero and Franco Lucentini, the film follows Commissioner Salvatore Santamaria (Mastroianni) as he investigates the murder of a Turin architect. As he is drawn into the world of the city's elite, Santamaria finds himself falling in love with his prime suspect, noblewoman Anna Carla Dosio (Bisset).
