Witching Hour (20th Anniversary)
Ladytron
Ladytron's producer Jim Abbiss was on a hot streak back in 2005 when this record was first released. He'd done Arctic Monkeys' debut album and just the year prior did Kasabian's debut album and Placebo's The Bitter End. So for Liverpool's Ladytron to sign to Island Records and get to work with Jim Abbiss at this point in his history is quite something. The hard-edged stomp of the relentless percussion combines beautifully with singer Helen Marnie's dreamy vocals and whirling synths on 'Destroy Everything You Touch. On 'Sugar' the shoegaze-y guitars froth to the forefront of the mix and lead a industrial rock storm. As for 'Whitelightgenerator', it's a hypnotic dose of goth-y dream pop that's enrapturing and timeless. It's 20 years on and with hindsight 20/20 it's clear Ladytron and Abbiss made all the right moves when they were in their moment together making this album.
