With From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth, Future Islands mark a milestone moment — not with a conventional greatest-hits collection, but with a carefully curated body of work that traces their evolution across two decades. The album gathers rare tracks, standalone singles, alternate versions and long-circulating fan favourites into a cohesive and deeply reflective release.

Rather than revisiting familiar ground, the band have chosen to illuminate the spaces between their major releases — the songs that shaped their identity in quieter, less visible ways. Many of these recordings have either never appeared on streaming platforms or have existed only in limited formats, now brought together for the first time as a unified statement. Compiled by bassist William Cashion, the album’s concept is rooted in transformation — the journey from humble beginnings to something more expansive and enduring. As suggested by its title, the collection reflects the contrast between everyday life and the rare, transcendent moments that emerge from it — “the dream and the reality existing in the same room.”
