Don't Smoke in Bed
Holly Cole Trio
Holly Cole herself liked to call this album her contribution to Fire Protection. The third full album by the trio of jazz vocalist Holly Cole, pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch dates from 1993 and was fortunately recorded on analog tape. The album meant the breakthrough of the troupe, previously known practically only in Canada, because with the opener "I can see clearly now" succeeded a variant of the well-known song, which has almost nothing in common with the well-known Johnny Nash version and yet is immensely good. Here the otherwise rather shallow Caribbean melody becomes an engaging spiritual hymn.
Cole also sets completely different accents in the other songs on the album with partly familiar material. "Cry (if you want to)" becomes an almost rocking number and "Que sera sera" a life-affirming opus to uncertainty. The successful musical blend and the excellent sonic qualities already present in the original release quickly made the album popular in high-end circles. A sonic as well as musical treat even for people who otherwise don't have much to do with jazz.
Double LP with 45 rpm. We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
