At the time of their "Tough Tenors" quintet, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin still had contractual obligations with Prestige and Riverside/Jazzland. They recorded five albums for each label and "The Tenor Scene" was the first for Prestige. It was recorded during the course of a very productive evening at the legendary Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, which resulted in a total of four albums. Also released as "The Breakfast Show," this recording gives opportunities for the rhythm section in particular to shine.
