And then there was only one left: By the time “Keep On Moving” was released in 1969, Paul Butterfield was the last remaining founding member of the band of the same name that Bob Dylan had once hired as his backing band for his famous, electrified performance at the Newport Folk Festival. Anyone who expected the Butterfield Blues Band to replicate the sound of their first two albums might be inclined to dismiss what the guitarist and singer delivered on this album – and what catapulted “Keep On Moving” into the Billboard Top 200.

With “Keep on Moving,” the Butterfield Blues Band picks up where they left off on “In My Own Dream” and fully embraces their passion for R&B. Butterfield did not, however, turn his back entirely on his blues roots; after all, he lets his guitar scream with the same raw energy and no-nonsense determination as he did in the rough-and-tumble clubs of his hometown in the mid-60s. His backing band was top-notch: from the horn section – consisting of a young David Sanborn, Gene Dinwiddie, Trevor Lawrence, Keith Johnson, and Steve Madaio – to Ted Harris and Jerry Ragovoy (piano), Rod Hicks and Fred Beckmeier (bass) as well as Howard ‘Fuzz’ Feiten (guitar, piano, organ), Waldhorn, all the way to Phillip Sanford Wilson – founding member and later drummer for the Art Ensemble of Chicago – who ended his collaboration with Butterfield after the recordings for “Keep On Moving,” Paul had a wealth of talent to draw from. Jerry Ragovoy’s production, along with the extraordinary chemistry of the sessions – recorded at the then-brand-new Hit Factory studio in New York – resulted in an album that showcased funky elements, rolling bass lines, and razor-sharp horn sections just as impressively as psychedelic blues elements.

Lovingly remastered from the original tapes at MoFi’s California studio and presented in a mini-LP-style gatefold sleeve, this Hybrid SACD brings this classic to life for the first time in audiophile reference quality: With spectacular spatial depth and attention to detail, this collectible reissue pays tribute to the intense interplay of the exceptional musicians who shaped the recording. The numbered Hybrid SACD from MFSL, strictly limited to 2,000 copies, showcases the album’s virtuosity in an incomparable way!
