Many tiny stylistic experiments from their previous albums made room for one large trial, i. e. assembling a monumental concept album. The story: two brothers in a jealous quarrel over Victoria, a young woman who is tragically killed before the supposed murderer commits suicide – at least that’s what it looks like from his farewell letter, but in the end it’s not that simple… New York-based Dream Theater made a brilliant move by taking “Scenes From A Memory” on tour. While they play the complete album in one set, film scenes on a video screen support the story, a setup that puts this jealous murder mystery even more drastically in the face of the audience. The instrumentalists deliver a perfect show: John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy are as tight as a drum, while John Myung performs the most unlikely bass runs. On keyboard, rookie Jordan Rudess outshines many a concert pianist! And finally, singer and frontman James LaBrie is beyond all doubt anyway
