The Stratford Shakespearean Concert contains what is considered to be the finest recording of the Oscar Peterson-Herb Ellis-Ray Brown trio. Although the soloing was always quite passionate and spontaneous, the very complex arrangements are really what made this CD sound unique. At Newport the trio's lively arrangement of the obscure pop song "Gal in Calico" centers around Brown's amusing solo. The turbo-charged performance of "52nd Street Theme" is absolutely breathtaking. The Concertgebouw (in fact a Chicago concert) the trio had been together for over four years, and these would be among the threesome's last (and finest) recordings. The very tricky arrangements sandwiched remarkable solos, with pianist Peterson sounding especially inspired.
