Shake That Boogie
The Hoodoo Men
What has reached us in recent years from the former blues capital of Chicago often has nothing to do with the foundations on which the Windy City's reputation in this regard was built. From the 1930s onwards, Maxwell Street Market, which had to make way for the University of Illinois of all places in the 1990s due to historical ignorance, was the centre of the city's twelve-piece (and not just this one). Today, even local taxi drivers can hardly find this destroyed world heritage site. Musically, however, this incomparable flair lives on, at least as soon as The Hoodoo Men, steeled by hundreds of live performances, start playing their music. Honest, down-to-earth, raw and as authentic as you can be. Peter Samek on harp, slide guitar and distinctive vocals, Wolfgang Leinweber on washboard and Gerry Höller on guitar not ‘only’ play their way through acoustic covers from Sonny Boy Williamson to Little Walter and Sleepy John Estes with great skill and heart, but also impress with their original compositions that fit seamlessly into their repertoire. Nothing is artificial, contrived or imitative. Joy of playing, wit and a deep love for classic (Chicago) blues characterise this record.
