John Metcalf, also known as Blind Jack of Knaresborough (1717 ? 1810). As a boy, John Metcalf became ill with smallpox, so bad it eventually made him blind. In the period 1765 to 1792 Blind Jack built almost 300km of Turnpike Road, in the north of England.
