Sean Masters, a writer for a major magazine, has just arrived at his boss's home in Carmel. His boss has given him time off to recuperate from his divorce trial. As he settles in for a peaceful night's sleep, he hears a woman's scream from next door. He runs out and into the night to try to help. Sean finds Maggie Tremane naked lying at the foot of her bed, attacked and beaten by her husband. This is the story of two people who meet and discover neither is who they think they are. Each one carries a secret about their identity that comes to light as Maggie's life is put into more danger. The events that unfold serve to bond the two and cement their resolve to see Maggie's life put right. Micheal, Maggie's drug trafficking husband would sooner kill her than admit his mistake. She is his property, and he will not let her go.
