Reading classes are based on active learningstrategies. Active learning strategies have nopurpose if they are not effective in conveying thenecessary skills. This research focused on theassessment of the effectiveness of the developmentalreading classes at one large Midwestern communitycollege. Three measures, passing rates of the readingclasses, the passing rates of a credit class (readingintensive), and the persistence of students who hadbegun their academic careers in the developmentalreading classes, were used to gage the effectivenessof the two developmental reading classes, ENG001 andENG002. ENG 001 students read below ninth grade uponentering. ENG 002 students read below twelfth grade. Completion of the reading program put theseunder-prepared students at the same level asnon-developmental college freshman.
