This book is a result of the study that was conducted on women political participation in local governments in Bushenyi district, south western Uganda. The study specifically examines the roles of women in local government, analyses factors limiting women political participation and makes recommendations on improving women political participation in matters of local government. The findings reveal that women play a moderate role in politics such as participation in leadership, voting, decision making, membership in political parties and their activities, and women groups/associations. It was further revealed that despite these roles, women continue to face challenges related to illiteracy, patriarchy, poverty, and other cultural impediments that continue to subdue them under male domination. The study recommends government adoption of policies aimed at mainstreaming and promoting a gender perspective into all policies and the democratic process, creation of employment opportunities for women, more support for girl-child education and continuous sensitization of women about their civil and political rights.
