Surgical instruments Annette Frölich 1st edition
Surgical instruments
Annette Frölich
This volume describes implements and instruments for medical use from the Antique Collection of the National Museum of Denmark, identified by a recent investigation, interpretation, and evaluation. The author combines both archaeological and medical expertise. Each artefact is described, the use of the item is mentioned, and for each artefact is stated where it is possible to find relevant literature about this special tool or surgical instrument. The cosmetic artefacts from the collection are included in the investigation and description.
Annette Frölich is educated as physician and as specialist in gynecology and obstetrics with surgical experience. In 1995 she began to study prehistoric archaeology at the University of Copenhagen and qualified as mag.art. in the year 2003 with a thesis titled "Field Surgery in the Iron Age". She has since then worked with identification of medical instruments, dating to the first millennium, excavated in the Southern Scandinavia.
